3 Common Causes of Heel Pain

July 26, 2025 admin Comments Off on 3 Common Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is a very common condition. It can happen to people of almost any age. It also makes just walking or going about your daily activities difficult. Dr. Dallin Greene and Dr. Nathan Judd of Big Sky Foot and Ankle Institute in Bozeman, and Butte, MT are qualified to diagnose and treat the three most common causes of heel pain.

Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a thick, tough band of tissue that runs from the base of the toes to the heel and supports the arch. When it becomes inflamed it is very painful. Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs often happen at the same time, but neither causes the other. You can treat plantar fasciitis without removing the heel spur. The causes of the pain in the plantar fascia are bad-fitting shoes, overuse, and walking or standing on surfaces that are very hard for the foot to handle.

Achilles tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is a large tendon that connects the calf and the heel. It is very strong and flexible, but because it is used in sports, it is also prone to injury. The stress applied to this tendon by gymnastics, football, basketball, tennis, and running can lead to a tear or a rupture of the Achilles tendon. Heel pain in Bozeman, MT can be the end result, or it can be what makes you realize that you have a serious injury.

Arthritis

Arthritis can cause pain in the heel. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause growths on the heel that are very painful. Other types of arthritis can also affect the joints in the ankle and result in pain in the heel. The joint may become swollen, inflamed, and tender to the touch. You may even experience more pain after you have gotten off your feet and rested.

Treatment

The first treatment for most types of heel pain is rest, just getting off the heel. Orthotics can cushion the heel and help to provide some relief. Stretching exercises can help to strengthen the area that is damaged. Cortisone shots can help to relieve the inflammation and pain along with NSAIDs either over the counter or prescription. In the most severe cases, surgery is a last resort.

If you suffer from heel pain in Bozeman, and Butte, MT contact Dr. Greene or Dr. Judd of Big Sky Foot and Ankle Institute, both are board-qualified podiatrists and they are accepting new patients. Give the office today to make an appointment at (406) 782-2278.
