Sizing Crutches

  • Crutch pad distance from armpits: Should be 1½” to 2″ below the armpits with relaxed shoulders.
  • Handgrip: Elbow should be slightly bent to allow full extension when stepping.
  • Crutch length: Should match the distance from armpit to 6″ in front of a shoe.

Begin in the “Tripod Position”

Stand with crutch tips 4″ to 6″ to the side and in front of each foot. Bear weight on your “good” foot.

Walking with Crutches (Non-weight-bearing)

  1. Start in the tripod position with weight on the “good” foot.
  2. Advance both crutches and the affected foot/leg together.
  3. Move the “good” foot/leg forward beyond the crutches.
  4. Repeat steps #2 and #3.

Managing Chairs with Crutches

  • Ensure the chair is stable with arms and a back.
  • Back of legs should touch the front of the seat.
  • Hold crutches in one hand and use the chair arm with the other for stability.
  • Lower or raise yourself carefully into or out of the seat.

Managing Stairs without Crutches

To go up stairs:
  1. Sit on a low step.
  2. Move crutches upstairs as far as possible, or to the top.
  3. Reach behind with both arms and lift yourself using arms and “good” leg.
  4. Repeat step-by-step.
To go down stairs:
  1. Sit on the top step.
  2. Slide crutches down to a safe point, continue moving them as you descend.
  3. Reach behind and lower yourself one step at a time.
  4. Repeat step-by-step.

IMPORTANT! Follow These Rules for Safety and Comfort

  • Don’t look down—walk looking straight ahead.
  • Avoid using crutches when dizzy or drowsy.
  • Stay off slippery surfaces.
  • Don’t put weight on the affected foot unless allowed.
  • Ensure rubber tips are on crutches.
  • Wear proper low-heel shoes.
  • Position hand grips and pads correctly.
