A small pain in your heel can cause a very large life disruption. You may be one of the lucky ones and your pain goes away on its own after a few days. But if it sticks around, you need to have it looked at. Read on to determine when the heel pain you have should cause concern and when you should see a doctor. They will determine how serious the issue is and guide you in choosing the best treatment strategy.

What Are Some Concerning Symptoms of Heel Pain?

If your feet are trying to get your attention, listen! Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong. Never ignore heel pain, no matter how minor it may be. Symptoms involving heel pain that should raise some red flags are:

  • Inability to put weight on your heel, affecting your ability to walk and run.
  • Heel pain that does not go away after several days of rest
  • Pain at rest
  • Fever
  • Significant swelling and redness in the area
  • Loss of range of motion or stiffness in the ankle and toes
  • Open sores or bruising that takes a long time to heal
  • Trauma to the foot and/or ankle, such as from a car accident or fall
  • Numbness, tingling, and discoloration in the area
  • Sudden weakness in the area of your ankle and foot complex
  • Extreme, severe pain

You do not need to wait until you experience one of the symptoms above to see a podiatrist about your heel pain.
